Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

The mental health of a child or adolescent is the foundation for their entire adult life. At our Southfield clinic, we understand that young people aren’t just “small adults”—their brains are rapidly developing, and they process emotions and stress in unique ways. We provide a safe, high-end sanctuary where children and teens can find the clinical support needed to navigate the complexities of growing up.

Understanding the Developmental Spectrum

We specialize in identifying and treating the specific ways mental health challenges manifest in younger patients:

Neurodevelopmental Support: Expert management for ADHD and associated executive function challenges.
Mood & Emotional Regulation: Specialized care for Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and chronic irritability (DMDD).
Anxiety & Stress Disorders: Helping children manage school-related anxiety, social fears, and OCD.
Behavioral Challenges: Addressing "short fuses" and impulsive reactions related to Intermittent Explosive Disorder or conduct issues.
Trauma-Informed Care: Providing a secure environment for children processing PTSD or family-related stress.

How Mental Health Impacts Developing Lives

When a young person struggles internally, it often shows up in their external world. We look for these key indicators across three areas:

School Avoidance: Intense anxiety or physical symptoms (like stomachaches) that occur before or during school.
Social Withdrawal: A sudden shift from being social to isolated, or a total loss of interest in sports and hobbies.
Academic Decline: A sharp drop in grades or teacher reports of "spacing out" and lack of focus.
Conflict with Peers: Increased difficulty maintaining friendships or frequent physical/verbal altercations.
Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling asleep, frequent nightmares, or an inability to wake up for school.
Appetite Shifts: Significant changes in eating habits, which can be early signs of Eating Disorders or Depression.

Frequently asked questions

(01) Will my child be on medication forever?
Not necessarily. In many cases, medication is a temporary tool used to stabilize a child's "biological floor" so they can successfully learn coping skills in therapy. Our goal is always long-term wellness and independence.
(02) Do you involve the school in the treatment plan?
With your explicit permission, we can coordinate with school counselors or teachers to ensure that the strategies we use in the clinic are being reinforced in the classroom, particularly for ADHD and anxiety management.
